Sometimes Strength Looks Like Holding On

There are trees that grow in rich soil, with deep earth beneath them and plenty of room to spread their roots. Then there are trees like this one.

When I came across this scene, I stopped almost immediately. The tree wasn't growing in ideal conditions. It clung to a rocky cliff where much of its root system was exposed. Instead of taking the easiest path, its roots twisted and stretched over stone, searching patiently for places to anchor themselves.

At first glance, the exposed roots seem vulnerable. They aren't hidden beneath the soil where we usually expect them to be. Yet the longer I looked, the more I realized they were telling a different story. Those roots weren't a sign of weakness. They were evidence of perseverance.

Sometimes our own lives feel a bit like this tree.

The solid ground we expected gives way. Circumstances shift beneath us. We experience loss, disappointment, anxiety, trauma, or seasons when life simply feels harder than we imagined. We may even wonder whether we're becoming less stable because everything feels so exposed.

Yet adversity has a way of revealing where our deepest roots truly are.

As a counselor, I've watched people survive circumstances they never believed they could endure. They didn't emerge stronger because life suddenly became easier. They became stronger because, little by little, they learned to keep reaching for what would sustain them. Healthy relationships. Honest conversations. Rest. Prayer. Gratitude. Hope. Truth. One small choice at a time, they continued extending their roots.

That is the heart of steadiness.

Steadiness is not living a life without storms. It is learning where to anchor yourself when the storms arrive.

As you spend today's few minutes with this image, notice where your eyes naturally settle. Do they linger on the roots? The rock? The tree reaching toward the light? There is no right answer. Simply observe. Then ask yourself a gentle question:

Where am I putting down roots today?

The answer doesn't have to be dramatic.

Perhaps it's taking a slow breath before responding in frustration.

Perhaps it's stepping outside for five quiet minutes.

Perhaps it's choosing gratitude instead of worry.

Perhaps it's returning your attention to what is true when your thoughts begin racing.

Small roots become strong anchors over time.

The tree in this photograph reminds us that growth is still possible in difficult places. In fact, some of the strongest roots are formed precisely because the ground wasn't easy.

Today, may you remember that you don't have to have perfect circumstances to become steady.

Just keep reaching toward what gives life.

One breath.

One choice.

One moment at a time.

Stay steady today.

Today's Practice

Spend two uninterrupted minutes with today's photograph.

Observe before you interpret.

If your mind wanders, gently return your attention to the image.

Ask yourself one simple question:

"What is this image inviting me to notice today?"

Carry one word with you for the rest of the day.

🌿

Every photograph in this collection was taken because it made me stop.

It asked me to notice something I might otherwise have hurried past.

My hope is that these images will do the same for you.
